Diego Milito: "Painful to see Champions League without Inter. With 2-3 right players..."
Speaking to the Corriere della Sera, Inter legend Diego Milito gave a lengthy interview in which he discussed the past, present and future of Inter.
“After the treble season, Inter changed ownership, the goodbye of Moratti. Erick Thohir arrived and now there is Suning. It takes time when these changes happen. I am confident that the club can recover. It is a pain to see such an important football shirt out of the Champions League, this is what Inter have to play for.
“Icardi as my heir? Mauro is a talent with a tremendous potential to grow. He is different than me and what Spalletti said is not wrong (Spalletti said that Icardi needs to show that he is also a great forward outside of the box). Inter of today remain a good team but they need two or three great players to win the Scudetto. Juve, Napoli and Roma already have a solid group and if Inter can acquire the right players, the Nerazzurri can fight with those teams.”
Milito then looked back at that night in Madrid, not when the team lifted the Champions League trophy but to the post match when he said that he was not sure if he would stay at the club.
“I regretted it, it was not the right time and I would not do it again. Sometimes, I am so honest that it is bad. I will never know if it would have been better for me to leave but I do not regret staying at Inter. Inter gave me so much and viceversa. After the Champions League victory, it was difficult to change. There was still the will to win: the Club World Cup, the Italian Super Cup. The year after the Champions League year was a positive one, despite finishing second.
“Massimo Moratti? With him, I have a great relationship. We were always close and with him I won so much. My role today? I am an ambassador for Inter Forever, being attached to the Nerazzurri is something to be proud of.”
