Swollen ankle and muscle sprain for Nainggolan: perhaps it is better for Inter to give more recovery time
What in front of our eyes are a defeat to Tottenham and a qualification hanging on to the wishes and desire of Barcelona. In addition to that, there is also a white flag raised by Nainggolan who left the game just a few minutes before the half-time whistle. The last 40 days of Nainggolan have seen physical management that is not going smoothly: maybe because of the lack of communication between the player, coach and medical staff on the real conditions of his ankle or because the pitch surface of Wembley certainly did not help.
Nainggolan yesterday had a more swollen ankle than usual and a calf muscle strain. One trouble leads to another because this is the same ankle that forced Nainggolan out of the Milan derby 40 days ago. There is no peace and there is no way to find an acceptable physical condition. Of course he was fine during Frosinone and even in the days before the game in London. Medical reports said that his injury was healed and he was ready for Spalletti to use him although the ankle is always at the risk of relapse and it did.
And so against Roma, Nainggolan will not be able to make it. The coaching staff and fans can think about his recovery for the Juventus game and PSV. However, the knot of his general physical fitness remains and it must be re-acquired only by playing. Nainggolan would have stayed out a little bit longer after the Milan derby injury but the desire to play is always there for him, going beyond the pain threshold. Perhaps with the years going by, maybe it is better to take more time to recover and manage his injury calmly, rather forcefully. And the rest will come accordingly.
