Materazzi: "San Siro is our home. Juventus must not win at our home"

In an interview with the Corriere dello Sport, Inter legendary defender Marco Materazzi talks about the Italian derby with Juventus this Saturday.

How do you think the game will end?

“I would say 1 (1 means a home team wins). Inter cannot miss this opportunity to take an important step towards the return to the Champions League and to complicate so much the race to the Scudetto of a historic rival such as Juventus. If they do not win in Milan, there is the risk of being overtaken (by Napoli) and the pleasure for Inter and its fans would be doubled.”

Allegri said that “for us, it will be the decisive game of the season.”

“I know that they will be very angry and therefore, even more dangerous but San Siro is our home and Juventus should not win at our home. Not winning against Juve will make our race to the top four very complicated.”

What is missing at Inter to fill the gap with Juventus and Napoli?

“These are different teams because Allegri and Sarri have been working with the same group for 3-4 years while Spalletti arrived last summer. It is only fair to give him some more time. Inter have quality but without the money from the Champions League and with the limitations of UEFA Fair Play, they cannot afford to make mistakes on the transfer market.”

With the signing of Stefan De Vrij, did Ausilio take another… Materazzi?

“De Vrij is a phenomenon, a defender that can score 6-7 games a season. He really is a great acquisition.”

What game against Juve that gave you the most satisfaction?

“The victory of the Italian Super Cup in Turin in 2005 with Veron’s goal that came in extra time.”

Ronaldo recently said that “Inter fought against a corrupt system.” Do you agree?

“On May 5, Ronaldo was on the field and I respect his thought which is the same as all Interisti. But there have been other statements on which I would like to say something.”

Which?

“Those of Ceccarini, the referee of Juventus-Inter match in 1998. I was not there and I was just a fan but I remember well what happened. The whole world saw it and 20 years later, he is still convinced that he should have given Ronaldo a yellow card for diving. I really do not know whether to smile or cry. He was wrong then and he is still wrong now.”

Will Inter arrive in the Champions League?

“I hope so. Against Milan and Torino, I thought they did very well but they lost at least three points from those games. We hope that they will not be decisive.”

Lazio-Inter is the last matchday of the season. It will bring back the memories of losing the Scudetto on May 5, 2002.

“On May 5, 2010, we won the Coppa Italia at the Olimpico, the first of the treble. Inter will have the possibility to write another page of history: with three points, they will not win the Scudetto but returning to the Champions League would mean taking an important step appropriate their own history.”
