Including yesterday, Luciano Spalletti has lost the season opener five times in 23-year career
Yesterday, it was a false start for Inter after losing 1-0 to Sassuolo, an unexpected and bitter result for the fans.
Luciano Spalletti, in his 23-year career as a professional coach, has lost the season opener four times before last night.
He lost twice at the helm of Empoli in 1996-1997 and 1997-1998 season. The first happened in Serie B against Padova (1-0) but that did not prevent him and his team from achieving second place and direct promotion to Serie A.
The second, in the following year, Spalletti’s Empoli lost 3-1 at home versus Roma but at the end of the season, they managed to stay up, finishing 12th place with 37 points, just 2 more points over relegated Brescia.
The third loss came in the 2003-2004 season on the bench of Udinese, this time was still against Roma (3-1). At the end of that season, Spalletti managed to bring the Friulians to 7th place, qualified for the UEFA Cup preliminaries.
In 2009-2010, Spalletti’s Roma lost 3-1 away at Genoa, this is probably the most bitter of all these cases. And in the next matchday, the Giallorssi were defeated with the same scoreline at the hand of Juventus, resulting in his sacking (replaced by Ranieri).
