Gabriel Barbosa: "I have many goals to achieve, one of which is to win with Inter"

“I am young and still have many goals to reach and one of those is to win with Inter.”

Gabriel Barbosa does not forget the city of Milan and does not want to hear the word “failure.” Although, the only goal scored in 10 Inter appearances can never justify the incredible enthusiasm that accompanied his arrival in summer of 2016: about €30M to Santos and he was presented Ronaldo-style.

“There were so many expectations and I always gave 100% but unfortunately that was not enough.”

Born in 1996, Gabriel “Gabigol” Barbosa is back playing for Santos but is still a player of Inter and the agreement between these two clubs will expire soon. “Here, everything is great and I am very happy. I play for the club that I grew up in and this is where I wanted to restart my career. On December 31st, my loan will end and at that point we will see. My contract with Inter is valid until 2021.”

After a tough period, Barbosa is back being decisive for his club: 10 goals in 22 matches in the Brasileirao, 4 in the last 3 (including a hat-trick against Vasco in the legendary stadium Maracana). And together with Pedro of Fluminense, Barbosa is leading goalscorer in the league: “I would like to win. Forward lives to score although his team always comes first.”

Gabriel, things are going well now.

“I did not give up, even in the most difficult moments. And now I want to keep going and do not want to stop.”

Now, you have become an example.

“Santos have a great tradition with young players. Many did manage to get to the first team as happened to me in 2013. I am trying to give the young players here some of my experience and being a captain is dream come true.”

What’s next?

“I have many goals in mind as I am only 22 years old. I want to help the club grow and then I hope things to happen naturally. I played with the Brazilian national team in the past, not just at the Olympics and I am focusing on getting a permanent spot with the Selecao.”

Barbosa 4-0 CR7: your thought?

“Are you refering to the goals scored recently? The fans make jokes on social media and they tag our profiles to show what they say about us. But it is just fun and game to me. I only think of Santos, I know my potential. I was certain that I would do well with this shirt.”

Why it did not work in Italy?

“After the Olympics, there was a lot of pressure on me. The fans and media expected so much. I did my best to adapt to Italy but things did not go well. That said, I will not give up as I will continue thinking about the future. The disappoiting time in Milan will be useful for my growth.”

Going back to 2016, would you still say yes to Inter?

“Yes. This is a top club. It won at international levels and many Brazilians made history here. I had no doubt about accepting their offer even though that there were others that were equally important.”

For the fans, you were an idol.

“I will never forget their love. They always supported me. I too am a fan as I have always watched Inter matches on TV.”

This Inter is different than when you were here.

“The Champions League will be fundamental, I know how much it was missed by the fans.”

And the end of the year, your future will be discussed.

“I have a contract until 2021 and I am calm. Now I just think about Santos and to give my best for this club.”

Doors closed on a return?

“I have a contract with Inter, I want to win with them.”

Why didn’t you consider going on loan to a Serie A team?

“There were various possibilities but I just wanted Santos. I was sure it would be the ideal choice, only this way that I would return to my level.”

Which is needed to convince Spalletti.

“I had a conversation with him when he arrived at Inter and then I left. He is a great coach with a lot of experience. He has a strong team at his disposal and everything else to do well in Italy and Europe.”
