Inter-Icardi, the difference is €2M but contract renewal will happen because desire to continue is strong and mutual

There was a meeting. After a lot of going back and forth, there was finally a meeting between Inter and Wanda Nara for the renewal of Mauro Icardi’s contract. In silence, Inter have always said that this is how they want to conduct their business, sporting CEO Giuseppe Marotta, sporting director Piero Ausilio and CFO Giovanni Gardini sat down around a table with wife and agent of the Argentinian striker.

A very significant meeting because it is confirmation that the desire to go forward together is strong and mutual. Between Marotta and Wanda, they only crossed path unofficially once at the club’s Christmas dinner. This time, however, the meeting had a very specific professional objective: to talk about the captain’s new contract. Figures were not shown: that of Inter and Mauro’s request were not discussed. But the parties have already planned a second meeting and from this point onwards, things will get serious.

The trio of Marotta, Ausilio and Gardini will raise their offer already delivered to the Argentinian in autumn, when the former Juventus had not arrived at the club. Duration of contract remains unchanged that is until 2023 but wage proposal will increase from €6M to €7M including bonuses. Mauro and his representatives are asking for a higher figure: €9M, just like how much former Milan striker Higuain was making. It must be said that the now Chelsea striker has been the favorite comparison that Wanda Nara is using at negotiating table.

So, we are at €2M difference but thanks to the aforementioned desire to continue the marriage, it is easy to think that both parties will come to a common ground, with the club raising a bit more with bonuses to satisfy Wanda. With the current offer on the table, Mauro Icardi could become the second highest paid player in Serie A, on par with Paulo Dybala and after Cristiano Ronaldo. €7M is truly a top-level wage for someone like Mauro who would make significantly higher than Nainggolan (€4.5M).

Another subject that needs to be discussed is related to release clause. Currently, it is €110M and is valid only to those abroad that would like to acquire Mauro Icardi from July 1st-15th each year, without Inter being able to oppose the sale. The Nerazzurri were and still are pushing to remove it completely as Marotta is not a big fan of release clauses. Of course, Wanda wants the opposite: to keep it. At most, she could accept to raise it over €110M, this figure is also included in Lautaro Martinez’s contract.
