Former Sensi's coach Iachini: "His best qualities? Great personality, remarkable technical skills, exceptional person and professional"

When Beppe Iachini celebrated Christmas 2017 early, beating Inter 1-0 on December 23rd, he did not have Stefano Sensi available. In that season, the midfielder stopped twice due to injuries. It was his second season at Sassuolo and he played enough to contribute to helping his club staying up in Serie A and to leave good memories to the coach: “I had great performances with me: great quality, strong personality. I put him in front of the defense.”

He has played in many different roles in his career, what is the one position that he can give the most in?

“He started as a trequartista but I believe moving him in front of the defense allows him to be more important. It is not easy to find players who can interpret that role and are up to it. Sensi has a great future.”

What are his best qualities?

“The great personality is combined with remarkable technical skills, plus vision of the game and on the pitch. He is young and can still improve. Already last season, he improved in transitions, ball recovery and positioning.”

Conte wanted this signing. Do you see how Sensi would fit in in his system?

“I believe Conte will play with 3-5-2 formation. In that year at Sassuolo, that was the formation that I used together with 4-3-3. Stefano can do well. Knowing Conte, but also Marotta and Ausilio, I am convinced that they will place him in the right spot on the pitch for their new Inter.”

Another player that Inter are going after is Barella. How do you see them together?

“They are two of the best young players in Italy. Barella knows how to fit straight in as well as to give balance. Sensi is more technical and they complete each other in a major way. Both will be great signings, not only for the immediate future but also for the years ahead.”

Are they enough to reduce gap with Juve?

“Inter are already a good team, otherwise they wouldn’t have made it to the Champions League two straight times. If they were able to sign the 4-5 names that media is talking about then they would be ready for a top season.”

Last thing: How is Sensi off the pitch, inside the dressing room? Inter had trouble with that last season…

“Don’t worry about it. He is an exceptional person and professional.”
