De Laurentiis: "I tried to sign Conte. Icardi? I offered €65M to Inter, €12M (gross wages) to him but he decided to join PSG where he can excel more easily than at Napoli"
Speaking to the Corriere dello Sport, Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis discusses the case of Mauro Icardi and the return of Antonio Conte to Serie A.
“I have an excellent relationship with Antonio. We frequently swim in the Maldivian sea where I often see his extraordinary family. Long before the arrival of Ancelotti, when Conte was still in London, I bombarded him with questions trying to bring him to Napoli. He replied that he had a contract and Chelsea prevented him from talking to third parties. I think it was true because he then took a year off from coaching and then returned to Italy.”
Tell us why negotiation to sign Icardi did not conclude positively.
“To acquire him, I offered €60M plus bonuses to Inter for a total of €65M. While to Wanda Nara, for the husband’s contract, I proposed gross wages of around €12M. Icardi is not stupid and perhaps he understands that to restart his career at European level, he needs to go to PSG where he can excel more easily than Napoli. For him, it was the best choice. Regret? No, I have no regrets in my life. The arrival of Icardi would have prevented the signing of Llorente of whom I am as convinced as Ancelotti.”
