In 2011, Inter strongly wanted Alexis Sanchez but negotiation failed to materialize due to the overwhelming inclusion of Barcelona. At the time, Inter technical director was Marco Branca and he looks back to 8 years ago.

“We put on the table €18M, practically everything I had for that market session but it wasn’t enough. I also tried to emphasize my relationship with the Pozzo family, given that I have known Gino and his father Giampaolo since 1987 but they explained to me that Sanchez’s assessment they had in mind was much higher than the amount that I offered.”

Barcelona came and offered €26M plus €11.5M bonuses and everything else was history.

“I knew that I could not compete with Barcelona but it was right to try because the player was world class and I had no doubt that he would have had an important career.”
